Why Sol?
If you’re asking what is this ‘Sol’ thing, you have never seen ‘The Martian’. A Ridley Scott film that – long story short – ends up with a bloke being on Mars on his own for a couple of years. Each day is a ‘Sol’ – a sunrise – and he has to endure a few.
The other good thing about The Martian is the line from key character Mark Watney - 'In the face of overwhelming odds, I'm left with only one option: I'm gonna have to science the shit out of this.' And that's where we are now. Given some data and a lot of thinking, science will make sense of this, but we’re not there yet.
